A Simple Celebration
We kept our son’s birthday simple this year. My partner and I both had work to finish during the day, so there wasn’t much time for a big celebration. In the morning, I cooked carbonara and spaghetti for breakfast and lunch. I had planned to make a cake, but with such a tight schedule, I decided to skip it this time.
After lunch, we made up for it with lots of chocolates for the kids. That was enough to make the day feel a little more special.
By 5 in the afternoon, it was time to get ready and take our birthday boy out to a nearby restaurant. It had been raining heavily the whole day, and the weather was unusually cold. We were only bringing Kymani with us for now, and we weren’t planning to stay out long.
We dined at The Cliff at Highlands de Busay along Transcentral Highway in Cebu City. I liked that the place wasn’t very crowded when we got there. It felt quiet and comfortable, especially with the cold, rainy weather outside.
We ordered our food and started eating. While we were there, we noticed the waiters and some of the crew serenading another table with a birthday song. I asked one of them if they could do the same for our son.
Apparently, all we needed to do was order a dessert so they could put a candle on it. I had already ordered a mango float for Kymani, so that would do.
A few minutes later, another table was serenaded.
And then, it was our turn.
Kymani looked surprised. He said he was shy, but I could tell he was very happy. It was a small gesture, but it made the simple dinner feel more like a birthday celebration.
He also loved the food, which made it even better.
After we ate, we brought some food from the restaurant home for his brothers. We also stopped by 7-Eleven to buy some snacks and a tub of ice cream for them to share. It was our little way of making sure everyone at home got a treat, too.
Nothing fancy. Just pasta, chocolates, rain, a little cold air, a mango float with a candle, and some snacks and ice cream to bring home.
Sometimes, birthdays don’t need much. Just a little effort to pause from the usual routine and celebrate one more year of having this little person in our lives.
